realize that they were facing better
people than they had hitherto met and

Supervisor, to the rule served on him
requiring him to show cause why the
recommendations of the .Grand Jury
made In their presentment at I he March
Term of this Court have not liven car
ried out, respectfully shows:
1. That no copy of the said present
ment of the Grand Jury haa ever beau
served on tbls respondent.
fl. In reference to the purchase of
supplies for the Poor House and Chain
Gang, he denies that exorbitant price*
have been paid for such supplies, and
alleges that he has In purchasing said
supiilles, weekly, as required by law,
endeavored to purchase them at the
lowest possible prices; and ha* kept the
bills for such purchase* on file In bis
oltlue, and open for public inspection,
and in order m Induce competition
among the merchants furnishing such
supplies,has Inserted an advertisement
In two of the county papers inviting all
mei chants u> Inspect laid bills and of
fering to purchase such supplies from
the |terson offering the lowest price*.
But owing to the faet that such supplies
are furnished weekly to the Poor House
and Chain Gang, and mu«t He delivered
free of expense to the county to the
Steward of the Poor House and Cap-
tiln of Chain Gang, the price* fixed by
the merchants are slightly higher than
If such good* were bought by whole
sale. and delivered at the expense of
the county; and for this reason the Su
pervisor cannot obulu said supplies at
lower prlceBlhan now paid.
As to the public roads being ploughed
Into hy the adjoining land owners, the
Supervisor has endeavored to stop this
practice, and bas Instructed all over
seer* to have offender* prosecuted; and
If the Grand Jury will present the
names of tbe offender*, and the wit
nesses %u prove tbe offence, he will

The Georgia Rail Road Co. showed
tbeir appreciation of his services hy
sending him at their expense to differ
ent northern health resort*, held his
place fur him and paid his full salary
for nearly a jo*£.j(|er he left tho office,
his health uonthiutng to grow worse be
scut in his resignation, and settled on
his small farm near Elko, where lie has
since shown much pride in raising fine
cotton, oorn, oats, hogs, etc.
Mr. Stan sell has never been s candi
date for office before except for
8ergeant-at A rms of tbe House of Rep
resentative! of 8. C., to which office he
waaeiected by the Legislature of 1890,
and held the position by re-election un
til tbe close of the fast session, he
was also elected to the same position in
the constitutional convention last year.
He ha* been chairman of tbe Elko
Democratic Glub and member of tbe
County Executive Committee for sev
eral years, is a member of tbe Board of
Trustees of Elko School District, was
a charter nember of ths Elko Alliance
and basalwaye identified Ifimeelf with
every movement or enterprise which
had fee its object the Improvement of
the community.

discharge every duty faithfully, fait-
ing in with tbe survivors of the so-
called lost catAe and tbeir children In
the battle for white supremacy, lie
ha* beeu a delegate from his Democratic
c r ub to every convention except one,
and then he declined to accept because
two of hi* warm personal friends were
candidates for the same office. He has
been a manager in vvery election from
1876 to 1894. He was largely Instru
mental in getting up the first Alliance
In the county, wbich continues to live
and has a membership'of 35. Since his
election aa County ^Supervisor he has
! I ven all his time and energies to the
ischarge of its duties, and his friends
are proud of tbe record he bas made.

J. A. Chassereau was born in Three
Milfi township, Barnwell county, fifty-
two years ago. He enlisted in tbe Con
federate service when quite a boy and
for over three years did as faithful ser
vice a* was ever rendered to the “Lbst
Cause.” At the close of the war be re
turned to the ashes of the past, and out
of them, Phoenix like, prosperity arose
and perched upon his every effort. But
his success as a fanner Is largely ’due
to the fact that ba married a daughter
of Mr. Hansford Kizer, from which
union Barnwell today has tbo promise
of excellent cltisens,* now able bodied,
healthy and bright boys and girls.
