ed further that Or. Ilaten had written
a earil explaining the receipt by him of
a coininissioR amounting to about $2,-
(KM) for extra and unolHcial work, but
iilniiirently shunning the- graver
charge* directly or indirectly uinrte
of a collusion with Klilnd and the coin-
mission. On arriving at Columbia I
found Dr. Bate* bad prepared a full
statement of the whole bond transac
tion, but under bad advice had con-
lined hi* statement as published to an
explanation of the commission paid
him, which was not at^ll satisfactory,
eveft to bis friends, and thereby bad In
vited rather than disarmed criticism.
He submitted thi* statement to me, and
now gives It to fbe pic** at my sugges
tion. I have read it carefully, and can
corroborate as true everything it con
tains as to the facts of the rase.
But for the fact that there are others

dal’’ I would adhere to my original
purpose of treating It with silent con ■
tempt, because (fen. Butler made prac
tically the same charges at Walterboro
