Apart from these two fact*and condi
tions Barnwell is achanged place from
the old town of a few year* ago. All
theebauges have tended along strict
lines of improvement. Where the boys
used to play base ball in an old aband
oned Held now stand Ibng rows of hand
some buildings; streets that were qui
etly resigned and consigned to weeds
and rubbWb now glisten witli brick
(lavements and are thronged with hur
rying crowdsof restless humanity. Ho-
tels, hanks airfl offices hare trespassed'
upon and filled up the famous “Old
Boneyard,” a place long notorious for
being the center of all the horse swap
ping and fisticuff' lights occurring on
public day*.
The* “Kalr Grounds” have disap
peared almost totally from the local
map. The circular race track and all
the stands and booths are gone and all
now remaining Is the old building,
standing grim and deserted in the midst
of a monotonous looking corn field, and
this Is the passing, of a place and cus
tom once so pleasantly known and

There have been some change* In this
old town full af pathos and yet Inevita
ble. Almost all of the <>ki citlxeos have
departed thio life full of honors and
•incerety mourned, leaving younger
and fresher men to assume their duties
and responsibilities. Many kind fanes
and familiar forms no longer walk the
streets to greet the passers by. The
church yams have many more “strick
en one*” sleeping In their enclosure*
than formerly^

Years ago, In the latter part of the
70*a, a famous batnlng place was the
Mrs. L. C. Tobin. A high grassy bank
shaded by Immense pine trees and a
stream 20 feet wide and from 8 to ft deep
afforded splendid batlting facilities.
Now all tlie trees are gone, the bank
has washed away and the course of tit*
stream ha* shifted and narrowed and
tilled with decayed limb* and rubbish
until It l» no longer recognizable.

could be found such strong and reputa
ble merchants as Messrs. Buckingham,
Bellinger, .Mauville and Bronson was
burned out a few years ago, thereby ob

the oldest living representative. A

Old Barnwell, before the Railroad
was built, was a sleepy old towh, en
joying It* quaint and quiet existence
with philosophical resignation, never
having any “booinlels” r«> disturb Its
equanimity or a fever nf progress to at

had to corns, and It came with the ad
vent of the Indefatigable and public
spirited Cant J. W Woodward with bt*
famous “Wooden Railroad.” We all
remember lb* first trip of the “Lula

well. About 11.20 A. M. It steamed
through the long red cut Into Barnwell.
