called the Steel Creek Stag Club, and

Superintendent B. L. Hughes, of thq
Greenville city public schools, has be
gun a good work. He interviewed fif
teen prominent physicians as to the ef
fect of cigarette smoking on boys, and
they all characterized “the habit as the
most injurious to which youths are ad
dieted.” A* a result of this Investiga
tion the school board has adopted
regulation that pupils in the public
schools shall abstain entirely from tbe
use of cigarVUe*. And similar action
should be taken In this town and
throughout the entire State.

Died on May 8th Mrs. Mamie Qwens,
wife of A. J. Owen*. '
She wa* a consistent member of the
church and < f a true Christian charac
ter. She leaves a husband, father,
mother and a host of brothers and sis
ters to mourn her loss, but we feel that
our loss U her eternal gain. She was
patient under all circumstances, and to
know her was to love her. She died on
the 8th Instant which was her Ibth
birth day. She had been married a vear
when she was called upon to leave her
bereaved husband, parents and friends.
She bore her sufferings patiently,
which is true evidence of Christian
faith. The bereaved family have our
heart felt sympathy.

DISPENSERS’ BONDS.
Th,e State Board of Control, among
tbeir last acts, passed a resolution re
quiring County Dispensers togi ve bond
in a -ecurity company to the aoiouut of
$3,000. Each clerk will have to give a
bond in such a company to tbe amount
of $1,000. Governor Evans appeared
before the Board and urged especially
that the clerks should be required to
give bond, aa it waa wrong that the
Dispenser should be held entirely re
sponsible when he had a -clerk. The
board evidently agreed with thla prop
osition as tbe resolution shows. It has
been stated that the question of gettin
a bond of this tort before haa fstle
among other reasons because tbe agents
of tbe company could not have access
to the bonks. Chairman Jones aayt
that there need be no apprehension
about that for every company desiring
to take such risk* will receive an order
from the Board of Control allowing a
full and thorough inspection of all

question Mary Jacobson, arrived there
