If every farmer throughout the cotton
belt would just plant one half of the
land prepared for cotton, in corn, the
price would commence to.move up at
once, and we would realize at least
twice as much for cotton this fall as we

CONFEDERATE VETERANS.
Pursuant to an Act of the General As
sembly the Confederate Veterans of
this County met in the Opera House at
Barnwell on Monday. The meeting
was called to order by Capt. A. F.
Free, who explained the purpose for
which U had assembled, the election of
two Veterans to serve oa the County
Pension Board.
The meeting was organized by the
election of Rev. S. P. H. Elwell, Pres
ident and J. A. Jenkins, Secretary. In
accepting the Presidency Dr. Elwell
made a very appropriate speech. The
vote for the members of the County
Pension Board was taken by ballot,
and resulted in the election of Capta.

United States:
The flrst quarter of 1806 present* the
largest list of actual commercial and
industrial failures In business in the

ities exceed assetta, ever reported for a
like period. The total (including fi
nancial institutions) L 4,512, or seven

1895. The largest preceding like to

amount to $62,613,000, an Increase of 30
percent, as compared with a year ago.
TWO EASTERS IN ONE YEAR.
Easter comeson the flrst Sunday af
ter the flrst full moon after the spring
equinox, March 21st. This year on the
Pacific slope the moon was full a little
after 10 o’clock on Saturday night,
March 28th, and March 29th was ac
cordingly Easter Sunday in all that
region. Probably not a half dozen
people knew it. East of the Pacific
slope the moon was not full until after
midnight of the 28th ult and conse
quently last Sunday was Easter In all
the older States. This is the first time
that two Easters ever came In one

band and two little children to mourn
her loss. They have the sympathies of

The Excursion to Port Royal on Sat
urday was not as largely patronized as
was expected, but that made It so much
pleasanter for those who went. They
were given the freedom of tbe Indiana
and had am^i# time to go all through
Uncle Sam’s greatest battle ship. The
work of cleaning tbft vessel, inside and
out, will be completed to dav, and she
will go North on her final trial trip.
The Supervisors of Registration met
st Barnwell on the 1st lust, and organ
ised by the election of Capt. I. G. Jen
nings, Chairman, Capt. N. H. Htansell,
Secretary, and Capt. C. R. Clayton Is
considered Treasurer. They began the
registration of voters on Monday and
will keep their books open for six con
secutive weeks between the hours of 9
a. m. and 3 p. m. * " ‘
Judge Aldrich has been the busiest
man in Barnwell during tho present
term of court. He has disponed of a
vast volume of business and the calen
dars of the civil side of the court are
clearer than they have been for year*.
