Richmond on Tuesday decided In favor
of the State and dlfiolved Judge Goff’*
injunction In the RegUtratlon case*.
Bishop V . J. Gaines, colored, of the
African Methodist Episcopal Church,
bears a high reputation for ability,
character and conaecratlon to bis call
ing, In Georgia, his flel<^ of labor. On the
2d lust he preached the baccalaureate
sermon before the Georgia fndnstrial
College, a State Institution for colti'red
youth, and produced ft profound im
pression by the force and courage of
his convictions. In sfieaklng of his
xace and its upward progress he said:
•‘When 1 first became a free man and
acquired a little education I started out
with the idea that the whole negro
race would soon be on a level with the
white race and that the elevation
would only be a matter of a little time.
It took me some time to find that I was
mistaken, but ! found it out after a
while. Now l am satiMied to elevate a
man here and a woman there and put
them to work elevating other* of their
race with the hope that after a while In
one pr two hundred years, perhaps, the
whole race will he brought up to a
hIgb plane of moral nnd Intellectual
and material proa parity. It Is slow
work and only by coiutaut effort can
We hope to succeed.”
The position of Bishop Gaines and
his opportunities for the inea*urenisirt
Of the capacities of his race entitle his
opinions to correspondiug respect.
His admission of the backwardness of
his race w ill probably arise a storm of
Indignation among Ida inferiors, North
ern politicians and .Southern colored
office and easy life huntera, but his
candor and courage show that lie lias
the best interests of bis people at heart
more than he does his own popularity'
and prosperity. And if col oredpreac h *
ers of less degree tlian Bishop Gaines
would honestly investigate this ques
tion, compare their narrower ex
periences with the Bishop’s estimate
and, accepting it, in full or so far as it
is proven to be true, devote themselves
to the care and wholesome training of
their flock* along the line indicated,
they would lie indeed good shepherd*
and ac Kiin.dish more further benefit
than all the politicians north of Mason
and Dixon’s line could do in a dozen
centuries.
In giving the suffrage to the Negro a
grievous wrong was done to the civili
zation of tlie white mail us well as to
the well being of the colored race. The
experiment continuing from lh*M to
1870 proved him totally unfitted for un
derstanding the responsibilities and
discharging the higher duties of citi
zenship. Nothing else than failure
'could have been expected from a peo
ple sprung from such a mother country
«nd in bondage so many generations.
The Southern Anglo Ssxou will not
•gain permit that experiment to be re
peated witli the patience with wlijcli lie
endured the wrongs of tlie reconstruc
tion period. Trovidence lias made liini
the keeper of his own civilization and
in large measure guardian of the well
being of the children of Ham. Ills
character and traditions warrant hia
being faithful and just to both trusts.
And in preserving the llrst he wil! con
tribute best to the latter, for it 1* from
blui that they are to learn.
If the “Mjptfter’s Union” of this'
Blate, the recent organization of colored
preachers which lias undertaken the
jnditioal leadership of their race, would
teach their people that they are yet rn
the infancy of their freedom, that the
ballot in the hand of the ignorant is
more dangerous to him that casts it
ithan to him upon whom- it falls they
<would begin an era of peace best calcu
lated for the up building of their race,
and would secure the full recognition
of ail rights before the law suited to
■them and kindly help from the older
white civilization.
They have come to the parting tof

'following the lights of such lire brands
as dmith and Murray or trirtt those who
have given them schools far their chil
dren, counsel for themselves and such
help as they were able when hard times
knocked at their doors and sickness

The Edgefield Democratl^Exccutive
•Cninmlttea has culled a mass meeting of
4lelegatcs elected from ’the several
clubs, one delegate for each twenty five
members or majority fraction thereof,
to assemble at Edgefield July 1st to se
lect three Reformers and three Conser
vatives that they w ilt urge the people
to nominate in the primary election on
July 30th a* Edgefield County’s del-
■egates to the Constitutional Conven
tion. Senator Tillman and Congress
man Talbert were present and fayored
such euual division.
In Abbeville a meeting U.fo- beheld
on the iid last, consisting of one Con
servative and one Reformer from each
club In the county to formulate a plan,
a object to the approval of the executive
committee, looking to (he adjustment
of differences between the factions of
the party.
In Aiken the County Executive
•Committee has agreed to an equal di
vision of delegate* between Reformers
and Conservatives.
In Chester, Fairfield, Hampton, Rich
land and Greenville decided efforts are
being made to get together.
In Laurens the equal division of del

Mrs. l*hlk»pnena Batnbcrg, who-was
the widow of the late Seaborn Bamberg
and mother of (.'apt. G. P. and Mr. W.
H Bamberg, died suddenly at her home
in Bamberg on Saturday evening last.
In her demise one of the most excel
lent women of Barnwell passes away.
She. was endowed with strong common
sense, a spirit that expreaseu itself in
noble charitable deeds and kind, cour
teous, true womanly dignity and grace,
and exemplary^ Christian character,
she was for many years a member of
the Methodist Church and died in its
fellowship about seventy years of age.
The town of Bamberg was named for
her husband who died about beginning
of the war. It is to her gain no doubt,
that sire now puts on immortality, but
human hearts can only feet through
faith in the AH Wise that it is best that
Mils pure, noble Christian is removed
from the sphere of usefulness here.

its next session a Hill to establish a
State Inebriate Asylum, for the treat
ment of victims of the drink habit too
poor to care for themselves. He pro
poses to raleo mean* for its support by
imposing an annual tax of twenty five
dollars ou every liquer dealer tn the
