Viola Neblelt and Miss Laura Clay,
who are canvassing the State In champ-
lousbip of the cause of female suffrage,
reached Barnwell on Saturday. The
clouds shut off the meeting appointed
for the evening. Mrs. Young returned
to her homo on Sunday morning, the
other ladies remaining until Tuesday
morning, when they took the train for
-tllendale.
On Monday evening the Opera House
was tilled wfrh an attentive and courte
ous audience. The married gentlemen
pre»eut appeared to be somew hat dazed,
their countenances sobered ditb an
unaccustomed meekness, but the lateut
spirit of rebellion sparkling in their
eyes. The lady hearers seemed to en
joy the embarrassment of their “lords
and masters,” whllo the bachelors were
calm and serene in their contemplation
of the situation aud ita conditions.
Rev. Mr. McRoy opened th« exerofsea
will* an appropriate prayer and Col.
Alfred Aldrich introduced the speakers
with inimitable wit of words and grace
of manner. The addresses continued
nearly two hours and were liberally
punctuated with applause. In arts of
oratory and winning ways of argument
the ladies proved themselves formid
able rivals to the stronger sex'trhich has
so long monopolized the political held
and It* harvests. One gentleman and
four ladies joined the Equal Rights As
sociation. ‘ *'

Solomon asked ‘Is there any thing
whereof It may bs said see this is new/
he probably bad no thought of woman
suffrage, and when that wise man said
‘So I returned and considered all the
oppression* that are done under the sun,
and behold the tears of such as were op
pressed and they had no comforter, and
on the side of the oppressors there was
power; but they had no comforter,’ It
would have been vain To argue with.
Hhu that woman suffYage would / haver
relieved the situation so pathetically
deplored. King Solomon may or may
jiot have been the wisest man who ever
lived, but I think that it is generally
conceded that he was the most exten
sively married man of whom history,
sacred or profane, makes mention, and
for that reason my Intuitions Inform
me thafc-he was not open to conviction
on the question of woman tuff rage. No
man with 700 wives oould be converted
to woman suffrage. Tti* eloquence of
tbeee ladies would have been worse than
wasted on such a man. But because
they would Inevitably have failed to
convince a man with 700- wive* it does
not follow that they will fail to make
converts among men with but one wife.
At any rate they will now give you the-

At tlm last session of Gongress an
Aet was passed imposing atax on all
incomes of citizens of the i'nited State*
in excess of $4,000 per annum.
President Cleveland and Secretary of
the Treasury Carlisle favored the pas
sage of such a 1 iw. It was expected to
pul from thirty to forty tidlllon dollars
In the national treasury every year.
The hard times had so cut down the
revrhnes of the governmeui that re
ceipts were far below expenses and the
income tax money wa* badly needed to
help even up mutters. Besides it con
templated putting a part of the burdens
of supiMirting the government on the
shouldersofcapitalist* who were hard
ly acquainted with the tax gatherer.
The rich dhknot take kindly to the new
law and went into the United States
Supreme Court to have it set aside. It
wa* argued before eight of (be Jus-
tlces. one. Howell K. Jackson of Ten-
ue^see, being absent on account of sb k-
nets. OuApill Nth the court de.hled
that so much of tbc<Act at imposed a
tax on incomes from rents and bond*
was unconstitutional leaving Mie rest
of the act intact, but cutting off' one
half the expectation of the revenue.

for. Associate Justice, George Khlraa ot
Pennsylvania making the request.
Justice Jackson recovered and the ar
gument was heard again before a full
Bench of ad tlm nine Justices. By a
vote of 5 to 4 the court decided on the
'20ih ln*t tliq,ent!re law to be unconsti-
tulional, on the ground that the tax
sought to be imposed would have been
a direct tax which is forbidden by the
United States constltutlen. Justice
.Sitlratn who voted first to sustain the
constitutionality _of lhe—act- voted
against It on the second round of argu
ment, and he be)d the balance of p<.vr-
er. Gossip lias been busy with hi*
‘name ainoe, charging that tlie Pennsyl
vania Kail road had fixed him. Ilia ia
the first Instance on record of a Jus
tice of that court changing b'.s opinion

It I* most unfortunate that the court
did not reach a decision unanimously,
one way or the other. The law was
either constitutional or unconstitution
al, and nine Judges; supposed to be
wise men, ought to have beon able to
agree unanimously whether It was
good law or no law. Their close divi
sion of opinion has glveaa sad blow to
public confidence in the wlsJoa and
learning of that court of last resort.
Everybody connected with public af
fairs, excepting the Judge* of the
Supreme court, has been abused un
stintedly, and now It has lost Us high
estate.
Mr. G. II. Caraway, an experienced
farmer of Darlingtoncounty, lays that
he and his neighbors have had uniform
success in curing hog cholera .by
sprinkling turpentine all over the sick
h*gs and leaving it to do Us work. He
has enred hogs after they were unable
to walk.

The Security Construction Company,
which Is totmlld a new and indepen
dent railroad frddi Charleston to the
West, Is making progress. Between
fifty and a hundred stockholders held a
meeting on the Inst. In Charleston
at which intense interest'waa-minifest-

sed to appoint at bis leisure a commit
tee of five to take proper legal steps for
the formation and organization of the

Latham, Alexander A Co. of New
York have received 2,141 replies to let
ters addressed to cotton farmers, fac
tor* and commls-ion merchants in
quiring with regard to the acreagv
planted this year and the condition of
the cron on May 22. The replies sum
marized show that the total area plant
ed amounts to 17,’558,000 acres, against
20,31)0,000 acres last year, a reduction
of I3W pey cent. The same correspon-
dentir report that the crop D, on an
average,, twelve days later than last
year.

a summer school in tlie South Carolina
College at Colhmbla will be opened on
Wednesday, July 3rd, 1895, and will
