Crime In Carolina.
On December 28ih 1883 at Spartan
burg Mute Constable Jack Bladou, with
several other constable*, went to arrest
Henry Palmer, colored, under a war
rant charging him with retailing liquor.
Biadon was shot arid seve rely wounded
and Palmer was killed, being tho first
man to lose his life, under enforcement
of the Dispensary law. Bladou was
tried at Spartanburg last Friday. Pal
mer** wife, mother-iu-law and brother
in-law testifying for tho State, attrib
uted the three shots tired to the consta
ble*. For the dcfcnco the constable*
testified that tile first shot was tired by
some one within I'almcr’* honso,
wounding Biadon, w lio then tired ta ice,
killing Palmer, w o was ten or fifteen
step# away trying to escape. The jury
could not agree, standing six to six un
til as a comproivUe two tickets, “man
slaughter” and “murder, witli recoin
mendation to mercy,” were placed in a
bat, and the latter was drawn out, and
presented to tbs court as the verdict of
the jury, which consisted of lO-Refortn-
ers and 2 Conservatives. Judge Fra-
scr, presiding, refused to grant a new
trial. Sentenced to be hanged Jan l*.-

ber 4, the greatest social event of the
season took pla^e in the Bamberg Itap-
ti-t Church, tbe marriage of Mr. P. N.
K. Bailey, tire popular principal of the
Wilthton High School, one of the
largest school* of Hi kind in the State,
to Misi Ltexfo Black, one of Bamberg’s
most charming and highly accomplish
ed young ladies, daughter of DK J. B.
Black, aud former directress ef music
in the Bamberg Graded School.
The Church was beautifully decorat
ed with flowers, ferns and mosses and
presented a striking appearance. When
the wedding party arrived every Real

and found the dead body of Mr. Cope*
in the road, Sign* showed that hi* as
sassins had shot twice, from Ambush.
Ten buckshot had entered h’s body.
Hi* bulk* and papers were found scat
tered in the road, but the satchel in
which huuiiiually carried tax mrney
was gone.* It i# thought that tho mur
derers found Irom fifty to seventy-five
dollars in the satchel, a* hi* pocket# had

The county was quickly aroused anil
hundreds of men gvbured there before

be sent to Orangeburg by special train.
Tracks of two men, evidently white,
