The Coasl Line Survey.
Lsst week we gave a re«nnie of the
railroad situation in this State as told
by people who professed to be in post
tion to know. •, .
l,a*t Thursday the Coast Lino survey
ors .reached Barnwell, remainvd on
Friday to get a g.M.d |<N>k at the fit) n
and surroundings and to complete their
calculaUnii* and on Saturday surteu
westward, following the Augusta pub
lic road.
The surveyors left Ashler Junction
seven mile* out of Charleston on the 1st
lust, aud the painstaking survey that
they have made is a strong indication
that the Coast Line (tenple mean luisl
ness The line that ha* been run is of
course merely tentative and experi
mental. Its purpose is to get a correct
idea of the face of thecoinury and to be
able to estimate with accuracy the cost
of construction. The line, that ha
been run crosses the Kdisto between
Kaysor’s Bridge and Givham’s Ferry,
passes Smoak’s Cross Roads, crosses
Little Saltk hatchie at Carter’s .Ford,
runs about a in lie south of KhrhardlV
and follows the public road closely to
Barnwell. It spans Hagood's mill
pond about three hundred yards ahoke
the dam. If built the road will skirt
the aouthern edge of the tow u, and
cross Turkey Creek at br near the old
Ford.
The surveyors were agreeably sur
prised at the ease with wbich the Salt-
kebatebie was crossed, and went up the
Auirusta road with rising spirits.
The routefrom Ashley Junction to
Barnwell i* very satisfactory. The dis-
tanoe is 1)5j miles, which can be short
ened from five to eight miles Major
Fleming Gardner, the accomplished
chief engineer, told ns that he could see
no reason why a strictly a’ralgbt line
could not be built for tarty mile* East
from Barnwell.
Some trouble I* expected In getting n
satisfactory gradei* the fwofee* norm-
try nearer Auguste. The aurvetofc*
expect to enter the Savannah River val
ley in the neighborhood of Silv* rten
if they cannot get the grade the/ wiek
