Stale* District Court, before Judge
Brawley yesterday, was that of the Uni
ted rttetes vs Frederick A. Blackwood,
charged with using 'the mails with in-
tent to defraud. Mr. R. Withers Mem-
winger, appointed by the Court to de
fend the prisoner, made a motion to
quash tile hidictineut ou the ground
that if the act mentioned to hare been
committed waa proven U would not be
an offence under the statute*. This
was overrated and the trial proceeded.
The tecCtmony was to the effect that
the defendant had a’ritten letters at
tempting to get duplicates made of ex-
pre** money orders,
by Mr. Hughes, showed that the were
depositing of such letter in a post office
