In IKDO almost three-fifths of the people
df the United States were single, little
more than pne-third married ami not
quite one-twentieth widow,ed. The
males constituted over 61 per cent, of
the population. The proportion of wid
ows was nearly three times as great as
that of widowers, showing that the lat
ter merry more generally and have
more or less sense than the former.

the soldier, whose widow she claimed
to be. had applied for an original pen
sion fur himself, bad been allowed the
pension and was drawing It regularly.
The soldier had attl avlts to prove that,
he was the person he claimed to he and
that be was alive. Upon these facts
being reported to the widow she made
affidavit, that the soldier was dead, and
supported it. with affidavit* of lHand*
who nursed him in his last \ Illness.

Willlamston and I’elzer enjoyed the
sensation last uenl( of the spectacle of
a vouilff mail courting with a gnu. On
Sunday afternoon a certain young mail
took a Miss Erfimerson to ride. A cer
tain other young man, Will McAdams
by name, bad been paying attention to
her and as soon as he saw them ride off
he got a horse and buggy and armed
