two hundred feet deep, but these
“machadores" (dlvfcrs) manage to fill
their goatskin sacks by diving to tho
bottom and holding tho mouths of tho
bags over the fountain jets; this, too,
without allowing tho salt water of the

The oldest josshouse in San Francisco
Is the Temple of the Queen of Heaven,
on Waverly street. It w as erected over
forty years ago, and, according to tho
Californian, is the pmporty of the Kom
ap company. The goddess worshipiMl
at this temple was a (’hinese young
lady who lived hundreds of years ago.
She was bom in the province of Foklen
and w'ns the daughter of a merchant of
the Lum clan. In her girlhood she Is
said to have displayed remarkable in
telligence, and was above all renowned
for hi*r prophetic insight. Her father
and four brothers frequently left their
home on trading voyages up and down
the roost. One day while two of her
brothers wore at sea she fell into a
trance. Her parents thought her dead,
and their lamentations were so loud as
