In the State, had the drst break ol her
second season last Tuoaday week.
Nearly forty Uioutand pounds of to-
baooo were on the ware-bouse door, di
vided into nearly five hundred pllea. A
dozen buyers were present from North
t'arolina and Virginia and more were
expected.
The average price for which the to
bacco was sold was about ten cents a
pound, although some brought fifty-
one cents. The weight is nearly a
fourth less this year than it was last,
but the color is as good and the curing
better.
The first sold was bottom leaves and
later picking will bring better prices

It appesrs to me that now Is the time
tnarmiNO the people of Barnwell to the
necessity of having cotton factories In
evory township In the county. As Our
(woplo have been so wedded to the cot
ton planting Idea It has boon almost Im
possible to get them interested la any
thing else unless some party or parties
first mode an experiment inside of the
county with the matter. Life Is too
short and your time and space too valu
able to go into facts and figures to prove
my assertion, but the starting of the
cotton factory at Bamberg gives us a
chance to get to work at last. Ten^years
from now Tn the probable natural order
of events Barnwell county wUl be one
of the most prosperous In the whole U.
rt., because there will be cotton facto
ries in every township in the county to
spin every pound of cotton grown in it,
and this will cause prosperity in every
branch of manufactures, planting and
commerce, but what is the use of wait
ing ten years, when we can get the fac
tories right now. There is plenty of
idle money awaiting investment in ev
ery part of the U. b. except in the cot
ton section where all the eggs have been
put in one basket by planting all cotton
and giving very little attention to any
thing else, and plenty rof this money
can be got Into any county of 80. Ca.

that will pay us better.

been in New York 34 years, Its victims

died since 1877. -
The present epidemic appeared in
March or April in the Northwestern
provinces of India, near the source of
the Ganges, among the pilgi lius of the
great Hurd war fair, which Is held every
twelve years. It has travelled a North
westerly course, closely following the
track of the epidemic of 1831 and over
flowing many thousands of square miles
of territory. Should it be kept from the
United States ^thia fall there la great
danger of Its reappearance earlier next
year, as each previous epidemic has con
tinued several years before 1U ravages

A News reporter yesterday asked Mr.
Finlay for hla experience wife the dle-
•aae. Mr. Finlay retasrobors when
uholsra was epldmalc In 1833. It con
tinued to make ite reappearance for
years afterward. In 1848 Mr. Finlay
lived wife his father Ilf loan miles from
Glasgow, Scotland. One night bis
father was suddenlv stricken with the
disease. The physician poured brandy
down the sick man, who, after Intense
agony, recovered. No member of the
family contracted the disease from the
father, but In 1864 Mr. Flnlav was
stricken one morning about 3 o’clock.
Terrible pains in the stomach were the
first syroptoma. While waiting for a
physician Mr. Finlay was put in a bar
rel of warm water. When the physi
cian arrived he gave hla patidm plenty
of brandy to keep up circulation and
then gave a prescription of rhubarb,
camphor and opium, which brought re
lief.
Mr. Finlay says the pains in the
stomach drive a person almost crazy
and he remembers that he and others
had to hold his father in bed to prevent
him from dashing his head against a
wall. Tl^e limbs become rigid, and the
agony is such that in a short time it
almost completely changes a person’s
appearance. ^ - c,^
■ Mr. Finlay says that in those days
cholera was so common that men became
hardened to the scenes of torture. At
times every man In an offloe or store
would be seised In a short time of each
other, leaving the place temporarily

A Record Breaking Year.
Kroxvillx, Tenn„ Sept. 17.—The
wife of Charles Billings, a poor moun
taineer, living In Asbe county, North
Carolina, baa just given birth to six
children, all boys. They weigh from
four ana a halfrto nine pounds each,
and are all alive. Mrs. Billings has
four other children, but they were all
born singly.
