Tim piinmry election Is over and I
am one of th« defeated candldatea. I
thank my friends that voted for me. I
never go w here I am not w anted and
the majority said by their votes they
did not want me in office, m> J am con
tented with my lot. Before I was a
candidate I was considered a ^hodman,
one man told me I was too good to
teach school, too good to the children
Rut as soon as I became a candidate, I
got to be a suspicious character.
I would meet one man, who would
ask, dp you belong to the Alliance.?
We are not going to vote for any body
but Alliatice-men. Another • would
say, “are you for Tillman?” Meet
another he would ask “are you for
Sheppard?’Vlt got me Ih such a fix I
did not know iVhat I was myself. I
thought 1 would keep quiet and abuse
no faction. 1 concluded not to endorse
Tillman and that would give me some
relief, but it didn’t.
1 was called a “fence rider” there
fore, and being a Methodist and believ
ing in failing from grace, I fell, not off
the fence but from grace. The elec
tion is over and I am again a law abi

Judge IV itherapoon arrived in Che-

Chesterffeld Monday morning. Ever
since Judge Witherspotin made the
mistake in the time for holding court
in this county and arrived late, he has
been very, particular to be in ample sea
son. It may not be generally known,
but at any rate we will state It now,
that Judge Witherspoon paid the ex
penses which were incurred by tbe de
lay so that the county lost nothing.
That gives you some little idea of the
uprightness of the man.—Cheraw Re
