Woodward writes to Fairfield News and Herald: A few weeks ago I wrote an article to the Cotton Plant recommending the manufacture of sweet potatoe meal as food for both man and beast. Experi ments made and facts ascertained since Its publication, have convinced mv that the subject is really of more Importance than I had supposed although 1 hid no -doubt of its practicability and utility at the time I wrote. There is yet ample lime In which to increase the potato© crop and I urge the importance of so do ing on all our farmers. Chemists tell us that potatoes compar ed wlih corn are as 3J to one, or that one bushel of corn is equal to 3j of pota toes as they com© out of the ground. Sliced and kiln dried one bushel of pota- t-K?* is equal to one bushel of corn. Any farmer w ill corroborate the statement that an aero which will produce ten bushel* of corn could be safely counted on to yield an hundred bushels of sweet potatoes, which dried, ns above, would amount to 23.4-7 bushels of com, or un increase over the 10 bushels of corn of 38.4-7 bushel*. Practically then the corn acreage of the potatde growing section of the country, If planted in po tatoes, would inerca«e the amount of food product about three times.
