were despondent the first of last week
over the damage that a three weeks
drought had done to their cropg. They

fields. The Bwlsbcr Company claims
that It can deliver rain at twenty-four

him with their subscriptions; and to do
this the editor or his reporters generally
see after the matter, and do not sit su
pinely down and expect every transac
tion to be submitted for publication

you allude that the editor of Tub I'bo-
rut was on the lookout for whatsoever
he could find, and did pick up the pro
ceedings. Tbe Harp at this place did
the same,but It was sent to neither of
them. They asked for the proceedings
and got them, and any other paper In
tbe oeunty asking for them could have
gotten them. 1 do not douhr that your
paper has a thousand subscribers, yet
you must recollect that there are six
other papers in liarnwpll county^nd
while I would cheeifuliy give any of
them any information that I could, yet
1 know’ of no law, legal or moral, that

of theorgi nization at Washington, the
death of Col. L. JL To!k having vacated
the t fUco of President.
Hon. Eli T. Mtackhouso died sudden-

staut at his boarding bouse in Wash
ington. He had just returned from the
burial of Col. Polk. Col. Stackhouse
was 09 years of age. During the w’ar
between the States he was Colonel of
the 8th Regiment of South Carolina
Volunteers and achieved distinction as
a soldier. A fter tbe war he was elected
a member of the Legislature. As a far
mer he was very successful. He was
the 0rst President of the South Caroli
na State Alliance and filled that posi
tion for two terms, as long as the con
stitution permitted, with signal ability
and fidelity. In 1890 be was elected to
Congress from the 0th S. C. District,
and was a candidate for re-election
w hen death claimed him. Ills remains
were brought to his old home In Marlon
county for burial, accompanied by a
delegation of Senators and Representa
tives.

Ills death Is a great loss tn the State
and its people but his memory wlM live
and his good example be followed by
