The Happjf Valley.
A gentleman recently returned from
a jrcneral ride through lower Barnwell
ana upper Colleton paint* a pretty pic-
turs of peace and plenty in all that re
gion. The farmer* have full ham* and
smoke house* and nearly every one has
a few bale* of surplus cotton. All their
debt* are paid and they are getting
ready to »ell their cotton and lend out
the money they will get for It. Their
happy condition may he reached by all
who will follow' their example of Imng
at home and not drawing rations from
the Northwest. •

The Carolina ltk%ud Railway had
it* first serious accident on Friday af-
moon. Train No. 1 whs wrecked by
a broken rail a little North of Aahjeigh
The first class passenger coach was de
railed Hrst, pulling oif tlie second clans
which in turn pulled off one freight car.
The passenger coaehe* rolled dow n the
twenty root embankment, turning over
twice in their course. Tho accident was
so sudden that pas-engers had no time
to prepare themselves and were Help
lessly thrown about as the cars Tolled
downward. - Fortunately no live* were
lost, although looking at tjie wreck of
