Fone Tnle*phorn*, who die*! before the r.iddle of tlio Second century, deserved CHtiouiging, if for nothing olae, Hr insti- tuting Christmas iw a foetival. It has b en celebrnt**,! ever’ Kinco in all Chris tian l.mde. and has given more hnppi n*N3 to children than any day in th*- calmdar. Making children happy is tho esaenco of Christianity. Of Into years, Christmas bavbacouie far ima'o n domestic and merrymaking holi lay than a religious om. But it is religious in the best aense, .since it is a day of pqftce uml rest, ami o;iens tiuj heart to human needs niul hixnau sym pathies. Tho most satisfactory way to observe Christmas is to do at least one g<^d act to some of our fellows. The conscious ness of d**ing such an act will inspire us to ilo others, and so sanctify tho day as to make it ever welcome. Christmas is always associated with the good Jesus who, whether regarded asGodor man, was the purest, kindest, noblest being that has walked the earth. Hi* has inspired love-in saint and sinner, in devotee and skeptic alike. Men may wrangle about creeds; but about Jesus Hfid his beautiful life there cau } hardly be any difference of ojsnion, for he pitied all who suffered and strove to heal every aching heart. Christmas has gradually evolved ont of its theology and has come to stand for a festival of love. Therefore all mew love it, for throughout the universe love Is horn of love and is worshiped for its own sako. A clear conscience furnishes the best digestion for a Christmas diliner. Christmas is a day to form good reso lutions. It is easier to form them that or any other day than to keep them for a single month. No conscientious person can enjoy his Christinas dinner if he knows anybody else within reach to be hungry. The consciousness that we have given food to the needy provides ns with the finest appetite. Christmas was formed, in the era of theology, from Christ and muss. Then papa called out very stern: “William, f you are in that chimney come down at once!” and 1 answered, cryin, that I would if 1 could, but 1 ’was stuck and couldn’t. Then 1 heard papa gettin dressed, and pretty soon lie and John from the stable went up on thereof and Jet down ropes what I pat around me and they hauled me up. It waa'jes daylight and 1 was all black and sooty and ^scratched and my arm was broken. t <• Everybody scolded me excep mamma. I had’spolled my sister's white rng, and j broken all of Tommy's toys, and the snow what went in through the scuttle melted and marked the parlor ceiling, ! besides I guess it cost papa a good deal to get my arm mended. Nobody would believe that 1 had jes meant to make some fnn for Tommy, and my ann and all my bruised places hurt me awful for a long time.
