Another Good Man Gone.
Capt. J. B. Zorn died on Saturday
morning at his home in Black ville, aged
57 years. He was n good man. He
followed the flag of “the lost cause’*
with unflinching courage until it was
folded*forever, and In the trying days
that have followed einta. no son of the
State has been truer than our departed
friend, lie was of the strong andj^tur-
dy material that makes free peoples
and good govern menu. The example
of'his busyj clean, honest life has left
its impress for lasting good on all who
came within the influence of his friend
ship. If tiie world were made up of
such men there would be no use for
laws of hnman enactment. He guided
his life by the teachings of - the golden
rule and was ready when the summons
came calling him to the higher home.

Rev. P. J. Hiers, of Dunbarton, was
in Barnwell on Monday, full of iifejtnd
hope and puhllc spirit. Before nigm-
fall he was called from the labors of
earth to the rewards of the better land,
from the service of the'chureh militant
to the blessed and everlasting glories
of the church triuinphaut.
He had nearly reached home, was
within a hundred and fifty yards of
wife and children when the sudden ami
terrible casualty occurred that robbed
them of their chief protector. He was
alone but the circumstances show that

| ened at a flock of calves, and starting
j quickly overturned the buggy, throw
ing Mr. Illersout against an oak tree.

On IVednesdsy night Oct. 29th, Mr.
W. 11. Hagood lost his cotton gin and
ffriat mill on Toby’s creek, near Barn
well, by a fire believed to have been set
by an incendiary. Twelve bale* of
cotton and all the machinery were
burned. The establishment had been
renovated and put in first class condi
tion last Spring. Mr. Hagood'* loss
amounts to $2,000, and U total, as his
property was entirely uninsured.
On Saturday afternoon Mr. W. J,
Duncan, of Red Oak, lost his steam
cotton gin and saw mill. One of hi*
band* stepped on a match which explo
ded ard sat fire to the cotton. Mr.
Duncan lost seven bale* and hi* cus
tomers six. The total value of the de
stroyed property was appraised at
f2,750. It wa* insured for $1,000 with
Messrs. Simons and Woodward, who
. paid him up yesterday.

married on Tuesday evening the 28th,
