Lightning struck the Presbyterian
churcih Tuesday afternoon with fearful
force and destructiveness. The steeple
was stripped of its shingles and the
skeleton frame left tottering. The body
of the building was badly wrecked,
weatherboards scattered, plastering
shattered, sills and plates split and win
dows knocked out. Fire caught but w as
blown out -by the high wind. Two
cows tied bear by were killed. Three
colored .street hands who had sought
shelter in the porch were severely

Our farmers used to plant to follow the
Georgia crop, but that now begins iu

year it has been the largest ever grown.
This correspondent has planted on

sudden death of Wesley G. Brown.

town last week. lie was looking well

some of the finest horses and mules ever
brought to Barnwell.
The Gregg Guards are prospering.

Col. Robert Aldrich, is growing great
ly in demand as a speaker on the issues
"fit the day. lie was invited to attend
and address to-day an Alliance meeting
at Santue, Union county, but was kept
away by professional engagements.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday he w ill
attend a great gathering at Sandy
Springs, Anderson county, and deliver
au address.
Fed Hay, colored, who wr.s shot four
times and severely wounded^ by Rev.
Aaron Bradley, also colored, on the ISth
ult.,ncar Martins, is recovering to the
great regret of many of the better ele
ment of the colored people, who would
like to attend his funeral. He is still
unrepentantand expresses his Intention
when fully w'ell to treat Rev. Bradley
to the same ‘^compliment of balls.”
A small cyclone visited George’s
Creek township on the 28th ult. Its
track was abput 75 yards Wide and a
half mile long, across the farms of
Messrs. K. J. Gunnels, Jos. Fail and O.
P. A. Wilson. Fortunately it missed
all buildings,* but crop# in its sweep
were ruiued and timber prostrated by
lbs terrific force. Small oak* as large as
a man’s wrist wore twisted off and torn
up by the roots.

The nnnual meeting of the Grand
Lodge, J. O. G. T., was held at Gra
hams on Tuesday and Wednesday of
la-t week. Over « hundred delegates
were in attendance, and in point of good
looks and inteiligenco ttie meeting ccno-
pafod favorably with any of equalmem-
bership ever held in the State.
The order is enjoying a phenomenal
growth. Within three years the mem-
bership has increascd thrce hundred per
cent, and the cry is “still they corne.”
The exercises were entertaining and
profitable, and theaddressesat flic Wed
nesday evening sesMion’vere of a very
high order of merit.
The delegates wese beautifully enter
tained. One tells us that Grahams Is a
“grand place.” Since the middle of
June he has spent a good portion of his
time there at the school examination,
the Alliance meeting, thopistrict Con
ference of the Methodist* and the Good
Templars gathering. The longer he
stayed the better he fared and when he
last left chickens were crowing, tur
keys gobbling ami all the good things
of this life »>* em»*d to be full of leaven.
The Grand Lodge will meet at Flor
ence next year and remain in session

all talking ami laughing, when John
son turned and thruw two buckets of
| mat Into the furnace. Just as he closed
i the furnace he heard Brow n say, ‘I<ook
| out: there is something the matter
I ahead!’
Johnson jumped to the aide of the
cab and grasping the hand rails, swung
| out and looked ahead. The next mo-
, incut he cried out: ‘It’s a red light!*
and almost at the same instant all bands
realised their danger. There was a
train on the track just ahead of them.

versed the engine. IUU it wa* too late
to avoid a collision, and the three men
in the cab renli/ed it. Brown ran to
the side of the cab and got out on the
steps, while Brissenden went out on the
foot rail crying out, ‘jumpfor It, boys!*
Those were probably the last words be
ever uttered..
In the meantime Johnson had clam
bered up Into the coal box and bad
braced himself against the wood board.
Scarcely had these preparations b© !,n
made when they had a second’s view of
a man frantically w aving a red lantern.

for his life and went flying through thL*

freight car, tottered and trembled for a
moment ami then went off the track
with a crash. »
The scene for the next few* minutes
wa* one of almost indescribable confu
sion. M**n were yelling unditUiuguish-
abie directions to each other and racing
frantically here, there and everywhere.
A* soon **44*»^ nature of the catastro
phe was realized, a search was at once
begun for the engineer and fireman.
Brissenden was found first. He was
lying almost directly beneath the de
railed engine ami had been horribly
crushed about the stomach, while bis
right leg was almost severed from his
body. It Is supposed that he was caught
between the engine and tender and
crushed to death.
A few minutes later the searchcra
found'young Brown. He,was found ly
ing near the sw itch to the “spur” track,
and was stone dead. A dark blue bruise
was on his forehead and right cheek,
ami a small bole such as a bullet would
make, was found just in the center of
his forehead. His neck had also been
broken. In jumping from the engine
he must have struck his head against
the switch and been instantly killed.
Johnson was the only one of those
who had been in the cab who escaped
w'ith hi* life. He merely suffered a bad
bruise o.n his right leg below’ the knee,
and expects to be out at work iu a day
or two.” ~
An inquest was held arid verdict
found that the accident was due to the
carelessness of freight train No. 86 in
not giving sufficient warning to the
crew of passenger No. 50. The trains
were scheduled to pass at Georges, but
No. 85 was behind time. Her engine
and a few cars had entered the switch
at Ridgevilie w hen the crash came.
Conductor Gilbert, of No. 60, claims
that his train was “dead on time” and
the crew of No. 85 claim that No. 50
was ahead of hfcr time according to their
watches.
The body of Mr. Wesley Graham
Brown was embalmed in Charleston
and sent to his parents Captain and
Mrs. John D. Brown,of Columbia, for
merly of wriliston. lie was their otily
son ami had shortly before attained the
age of twenty-three years. Hi* "life
was insured for $:i,0<XLin an accident
company and for $1,500 in the Brother
hood of Locomotive Engineers. He
was a young man of line character and
was high! veateumed by ahostof friend*.
Had hU life been spared it would have
ripened into sure and shining success.
