In reply to your question, “Chn
Blackville beat that?” I will say that
among the many beautiful specimens of
sunflowers In Dr. Milhous’ garden there
stands a monster measuring 13 feet
high and new has 76 blooms. A good
many have been cut off by the children,
and counting the flower steins It is be
lieved to have had ninety blooms. On
another plant bangs a monster flower
measuring 17^ inches in diameter.
Who can beat it?

Rough Holds and Broken Bridges.
Wht^t has become of our County Com
missioner for this territory - ? Has he
gone to the mountains or is he sick with
protracted fever or is he afraid to ven
ture in our midst for fear of breaking
through the dilapidated bridges, falling
into washes in the roads or catching the
measles ?
We were not slighted last year and
may be we will not be next summer.
We.would like our bridges to be re

the dangers of travel our young folks
have done mighty little courting so far
and unless they are helped out soon the

awfully short. —Sycamore.

Kfatise, July 20.
The protracted meeting at St. Johns
is always a success, bijt this year It
reached the afcifie of interest. The pas
tor, Rev. K. W. Teeplos, was assisted
by Rev. Robt. Williams of Saltke-
hatchie. Mr. Williams is an earnest,
logical, persuasive preacher. Mr. Peep
les is a fine pulpit orator, and all of
bis sermons are edifying. Their efforts
at St. Johns did honor to each of them,
and we are sure much good has been ac
complished.
The meeting began Saturday contin
uing throe days; two services each day.
Dinner was served at the church, and
the spread was abundant. On Sunday
the crowd numbered fully 600. .
Miss Lula Kinard was the organist,
and led the singing which was superb.
There were four accessions to the
church.
On going to the baptismal font on

This -is saying nothing of those who

A Doctor’s Diagnosis.
Editor Fron.r,:—Years ago there
was a gr^at deal of complaint over the
damage done by cotton caterpillars and
boll yvorms. But nil the harm that they
have done is but as a drop in the bucket
to the loss inflicted by the cotton bacil
lus. This new enemy to the South has
attacked the brains of a majority of the
farmers in the South Atlantic and Gulf
States and crazed too many with the de
lusion that they were on the road to
riches while they were really on the
down grade to pauperism. My studies
of the cotton bacillus shows that it has
an insatiable appetite for money, either
paper or metallic, and it flourshes most
in the shadow of real estate mortgages.
Frequent experiments have shown that
It fattens on Western provision*, but in
every case where the patients have lived
upon plain homo made food theii proper
senses have been restored, tho holes in
th,pir pockets closed, their mortgages
satisfied and their prosperity, if not
very brilliant, still becomes as solid as
a silver dollar. I know it is in viola-
tkm-'of the sometimes strained ethics of
my profession to proscribe through the
press, but the disease is so epidemic that
I think caremony should stand aside. I
guarantee a care in every case where
the food is as above prescribed and the
sick take* six days work in the week as
a tonic. -- u. v.
