Finally the president of the municipal
council, accompanied by two Effendis,
presented himself before Sister Sion, su
perioress of the Daughters of Charity,
, and asked her to“give some of her nuns
for the service of th§^ hospital. She at
once asked from her rupriors the i>er-
miHRion to accept the invitation, and a
few days later tho municipality itself
came to thank the sisters for their con
sent, and beg them at once to arrange
the house for tho reception of tho sick.
There was no time to lose. In early
May they received their notice, and on
Sunday, May 10, Alie opening was to take
place in presence of Ibrahim Pasha and
the seraglio—that is to say, tho council
comfiosed of a memlier of each national
ity, the heads of nil the religions and tho
municipal council.
THE PRESENTATION.
For three days and three nights tho

The military doctor, on being present

Sixteen doctors of tho city who had

tions to them. Finally the president of
the municipal council assembled all the
personnel of tho establishment before the

A moving scene then took place. He
cause ! all to swear respect to the sisters
—first of all tho medical staff, then the
pharmacists, the nurses, cooks, garden
ers and porters. FacIi came up accord
ing to bis rank and swore in his own
language and manner what was asked.
When tho last had retired the presi
dent said: “Sisters, 1 confide this house
to you. Yuu nro at home. 1 need not
beg you to act as mothers among your
