gloves, and in that condition parboiled
and smothered. In spite of all precau
tions our faces were much swollen with
the )K>ison of numberless bites.
To escape the hot sun we took refuge

a smudge was made'on some sand in the
bottom of the boat, which filled the hold
almost to suffocation. The mosquitoes
were too ravenous to bo wholly foiled by
smoka 1 think 1 never endured such

po^ible. The boat had to be worked by
hand around*.the numerous bends, and
hall the time tho sails were useless for
wuot of wind. It was a burning calm
in the midst of a swamp. But even in
our distress there was a htimorous side,
