costumes. Prof Norris has a decided
dramatic turn, and his rendition of
Richard III was very creditable.
Howell’s mill pond, which in ante
bellum days was one of the notable
spots of th» County, lias an interesting
bit of history connected with its con-
struction.. Tradition runs that nearly
a hundred years ago tlie builder prom
ised a slave freedom if he would build
tiie dam. lle ( was turnished with a curt
and mule. Some antiquarians say that
the negro took seven years and some
make tlie period of service longer, but
they agree that the negro won his lib
erty after incredible labor. But the
glory of Howell’s mill has departed.
The venerable trees that line the long
dam are festooned with moss, number
less fish sjiort amid tlie lily-pads, a corn
mill w ith meagre patronage creaks on
day af|;ei| day and seems to sing the re
quiem of departed grandeur Around
this broad expanse of waters,—for it is
one of the largest ponds in the State—
the houses are-tenanGes* wmTdeserted,
for man cannot survive the deadly ma-
aria. it is a deadly and a dangerous
locality ana it* existence is a standing
