built or under construction was the
8Atx, of 4^000 Cons, laid down in 1883
and completed in 1887. In 1885 the Tage
was begun. Her displacement of 7,050
tons much exceeded that of any unar-
tnored cruiser then afloat. She was the
pioneer of the very’ large unarmored
forttiser, an&^tho idea has been widely

large vessels can sustain high speed in a
seaway, and if continuous high speed is
required large size is a necessity.
Economists in all countries fought
strongly for smaller vessels, but the
facts bore too heavily against them.
When merchant vessels reached a length
of 650 feet, 13,000 tons displacement and
a sustained sea speed of over nineteen
knots in any ordinary weather, it was
useless to build commerce destroyers of
three or four thousand tons, no matter
what might be the speed of the latter in
smooth water.
The latest cruisers designed by the
French carry thin vertical tmnor for
protection against high explosive shells.

was appealed to on behalf of a charitable
institution. He meant by that order to
give a barrel of half used cakes of toilet
soap collected from the bedrooms. This
waste is one of the principal items in
hotels where it is the rule to pula fresh
