Hon. W. D. Simpson, Chief Justice
of the Jlate Supreme Court, died in Co*
.lumbla Friday morning of heart fail
ure. in his sixty eighth year. A w ife
and seven children survive him. He
began the practice of the law forty-live
years ago and has ever since been prom
inent in public life. He represented his
native county, Laurens, in the General
Assembly as Senator and Representa
tive before the war. In the beginning
of the struggle between the States lie
entered the army »nd after First Ma
nassas was elected Major of the IBh S.
C. regijneut. He rose to be its Lieu
tenant Colonel, never missed a battle
and was never wounded as long as he
remained In the sefvloe. In 1S63 he was
elected to the Confederate Congress
and continued until the war ended. In
184H lie wa* ejected to the U. H. Con*
gress by a majority of 4,800 votes over
-A. 8. Wallace, Republican, but hU scat
was refused him. In 1870, without his
preseuee-or knowledge, be w as nomi
nated for Lieutenant Governor on the
Alliance Department.

The Hampton Guardian of last week
had an interesting sketch of the life
and labors of Kbt. W. H. Dowling, so
well and favorably known in-thfcvcoun-
ty. He was born in Prince William
Parish, Beaufort District, 4th August
1842. He was converted in 1858 under
the ministry of Rev. J. M. Hoover. In
1859 he taught school at Bethel church
in Barn well District and made arrange
ments to study for the ministry. The
coming on of the wai^ postponed that
intention. He entered the confederate
service and “wore the gray” until its
close, taking part in twenty five battles
under Butler and Hampton.
In July 18*15 be was licensed to
preach and wss ordained at Bethel
church by a presbytery composed of

The succcssofto the late Chief Jus
tice Simpson must, under the Constitu
tion, be elected by the LegUlature. Ta
pers and people are already canvassing
the chances of the probable candidate*
and wondering w heihcr the Governor
will call an extra session to fill the va
cancy. j
W hile there in always need for * full
bench we do not know that there is or
will be such supreme exigency a* to re
quire that the place shall be filled im
mediately. It would coat the State and
Its tax payers a good lot of money, and
utile** the benefits to be secured should
bo worth more than the .ex(>en*e it
would be well snd wise to postpone the
election until the next regular session.
More time would enable the legislators
to become better acquainted with the
characters and qualifications of the can
didates for the succession. The purity
and ability of the Bench is a matter in
w hich every citizen of high and of low-
degree is immediately interested. The
live*, liberties, right* and prosperity of
the people are in their hands ami they
should be men of the hlgheaf ability,
purest character and bravest courage to
do right. Troperly valued they are of
far higher honor and responsibility than

Kx-Judge K. B. Carpenter, who
flourished in this State during recon
struction times, seems to be getting up
again politically in CaliforiJa, where he
has lived for several years, having been
recently elected to the State Senate from
Los Angeles. His family left Colum
bia last week to join him on the' golden
shore.
