. By the service of previous terms Mr.
Hemphill has fully proven his eminent
fitness for that high trust. It is but
Ike simple truth that he has taken a
more influential position in National
affairs than any of his colleagues, lie
has frequently crossed swords with the
ablest members of the opposition, in
every instance with credit to himself
and honor to^the State. Young, strong,
brave and gifted it will be a fit and
proper recognition of his worth that he
should be returned without a contest.

voted son. If his life shall be spared it
ma> be said hereafter that she has never
cherished on a e more distinguished. He

Mr. W. R Fried, of Pittsburg, is at
work drafting the principles of a new
political party. He says that he "is
“acting under the advice of the nation
al executive committee of the Farmers’
Alliance.*’ He proposes soon to call a
general convention at Pittsburg for the
purpose of organizing the American
National party. The underlying prin
ciple of the new political party is that
agricultural land la the proper basis for
«ur national currency and hanking.
In explaining this Freld said>

ger hoard up millions of gold and sil
ver as a surplus in our . treasury ou
which to base our paper currency; we
need no longer use gold, silver or any
other commodity which shall bp re
quired to be placed into disuse for this

burdening our commerce unnecessarily

Eastern State* over since the war. The
West must co-operate with the South
before success can be achieved, and in

advising the Southern wing of the Alli-r

The warehouse committee of the Far
mers’ Alliance met at Allendale on Au
gust 12th and procured a suitable lot for
their budding, on which, they expect) to
build a warehouse 100 feet square, w ith
iron roof. This will hoof great tone tit
to the farmers who cannot store cotton
in the depot or on the railroad platform.

derstood - by all of its members that it
should not, in ifs proper sense, be a po
litical body.
Second. From first indtcatioiu plain

desired than my membership and my
presence,
Third. That the colored Alliances in
the up-country are endorsing Ben 'nil-
man, and w hile 1 am neither opposed to
the Farmers’ Alliance, when managed
and conducted by w isdom, intelligence
and discretion, tior am I averse to tin*
Farmers’ Movement as properly under
stood, and only when in the slightest
degree they are sustained and followed
by political “turncoats, demagogues,
oilice-seekers and jack leg lawyers. But
frotp principle, 1 am strongly opposed
to Ben Tillman and to his destructive
nnd visionary schemes of reform, who,
after six years of subtle efforts, has now’
succeeded most adroitly in destroying
the Democratic party in our Tkate.
When first embarking Mr. THtoiaiimost
blandly affirmed and reiterated that he
was going to have only a family quarrel
w ithin the circle of our mother. Democ
racy. But he should first have been
taught in his youthful lessons when a
boy that a ‘bouse divided against itself
cannot stand.”
