gineer of the Comstock, haa been

the Sierrot, about the bend waters of
the Kawenh river. Tutare county, Cal
ifornia. He was accompanied in his
wanderings by Westley Warren, au
old Cotnstoeker, who now resides in
Tulare valley. About the headwaters
of tbe Kaweoh they got into an unex
plored and almost impenetrable re
gion. In one place they were obliged
to cut a trail for almoat a mile in or
der to get through the cha|Mtreal that
blockaded-the mountain paa*. Mr.
Clough says that ou the trip they dis
covered a tree of acquoia specira,
which be believce to be much the
largest on tbe continent of America.
Mr. Warren/ who lias seen the big
treeu of Mariptae, thnao of the bi^ tree
grove in Calaveras county, and all the
big trees of tlte coast range, says there
is iu no place in California a tree
which approaches iu site that on the
Weak
The men had with them no rule,
Upeline or measure of any kind, but
Mr. Warren measured the tree with
his rifle, which was four feet in length.
He fouud it to be forty four lengths of
his guu in circumfervuce at a point as
high above the ground as lie could
roach. Tho top of the tree had been
broken off. but it is atilt of unnieiiNe
height. Tliis monster tree stands in a
small basin near the Ksweah. and is
surrounded on all sides by a wall of
huge, rugged rocks. There’is so much
brush iu the vicinity lluil the little
valley in which the tire stands is al

. The case is of bird's eye black
walnut and on the lop of it stand throe
golden statuettes. The central figure
represents Atlas bending bcuealn the
weight of a miniature globs. The
right and left IIgures are counterparts
of Gabriel iu the act of blowing his
trumpet. When wound the clock runs
eight days. D gives the day of the
mouth with the phases of the moon as
well as the hour, and strikes every
quarter. Considering that it has been
ticking away the hours for over two
centuries, it keens reiuarksbie time
and ia iu a wonderful state of preser
vation. It luu an air of peal ages
about it and is undoubtedly s histori
