a blind farmer would cultivate the
ground with the plow, spade and hoe-

numerous dignitaries and officials in tho
suite of the shah of Persia is a young boy
of 12. w hom the shah has covered w ith
dignities and titles, and who is an object
of envy and fear to most of his majesty’s
minister*. His name is Ooolatnali Khan.
He is the director of the corps of “niyal
pages," and one of his titles is Azizus-
Sultan, “Farorits of th* Monarch.-"
Neither minister, vixier nor royal prince
has ever yet been allowed to sit at tbs
shah’* Cable, but Goolam&li Khan is an
exception to this law of the Persians. Us
is constantly hy his master's side, and
has nmre servants to wail upon him titan
any two of tbe royal ministers. The ex
planation of this rxtmordinary treat
ment is to bs found in tho Persian mon
arch's conviction that his life is In^epar-
ably and mystcrtously bound up with
that of OoolareaU Khan, and that wise
men have foretold that the ahah'a death
wtU bs preceded only a few days by that
of his young favorite; that the health and
prosperity of tlm latter will mean the
health and prosperity of the former, and
that, generally, whatever befalls this lit
tle one w ill also happen to his royal pro
tector. This belief has resulted in ths
boy leading q lifo of ease and luxnry un
known to the most fortunate courtiers
in Teheran. He was seated on the knees
of two magnificent grandees on ths
