The case la one of unusual interest on
aceouiu of the. social poaltiiAi and Intel
ligence of the parties, and because^of
the beauty of the lady moat interested
and her plain endeavor to do what w as
right after committing a thoughtless
and rather romantic Indiscretion.
MIm Little was reared and educated
liberally in the cultured town of Gatf-
ney, In Spartanburg county. Her p *r*
M«tial loveliness both of charactrr and
apiiearnuco made this promising young
woman yany friends. Ainong tlics^'
yoiftig Augustus MluU seemed to have’
won the first place in the heart of the
orphan girl. When these two lovers
w ere about seventeen years of age they
became engaged, but their plighted
vofrs were kept secret. j

C., a much older man than Mint/., met
Miss I.Htle, became Interested in her,
sought her love add won her hand.
Young Mints, though a mere school
boy, and with his fortune y*4 to make,
had the recognized advantage of being

the engagement of Miss Little to At-
kitiaun, but nevertheless continued to
urge his claims.

three years, at the expiration of w hich

being called responded to their reijucst,

mantic young pair sat in a buggy, and
according to the law s of South Carolina
made them husband and wife, as surely
and as eternally as though hundreds of
friends had witnessed the contract un
der the most impressive uircutustancvs.

Dr. Atkinson had culled during her
absence and learning that she, Ids in
tended bride, had spent the eve of her
marriage in the company of a recog
nized rival, lu> angrily and hastily de
parted, and returned home to Chester,
declaring the engagement cancelled.

ly wounded and disappointed a very
good man, who ’oved her am! would
make her a model husband. Hut now

Mint* to fly into a rage.
He first told his father that Mrs. At
kinson was his wife, and upon the pa
ternal advice that Mintz claim her as
his bride, he did*sof and created a son-
sattou that roused the whole state.
Mrs. Atkinson denied this, and protes
ted that th#w hole story was the re*ulr-
of a discarded lover's jealousy. But
w hen the Rev. Mr. Carter was inter
viewed and corroborated Mintz’s . ver
sion of the affair, about ten dSYi later,
the young wife hysterically admitted
the sad truth, blamed herself excoed-
fngly for the trouble she has Urvuight
upon a kind and respectable man, now
her actual husband, and they two
agreed that it w as best for both that
they should separate immediately until
* some legal steps could bo taken to dis
entangle the unfortunate situation.
Ho the handsome young lady, whom
all called Miss Florence Little, who
was in reality Mrs. Augustus Mintz,
but who earnestly longed to )>e in deed
and in truth Mrt. D. C. Atkinson, re
turned to the home of her relatives.
