The UeLa Howe
School—or Agricultural College, If the
name sounds mors pleasing—taught
practical work on the farm, while it
taught the rudiments of a Mlerary edu
cation. The result wa* that It produced
neither farmers nor scholars that have
been distinguished In either line. Di
viding the energies of the students
seemed to paralyse their effort*, and
they excelled in neither line. It take*
a man's whole energy to Attain distinc
tion or to accompli*h a desirable end.
Therefore, a divided energy—like a di
vided house—Is sure to bring undesir
able re*iilt*. *
We are quite sure tfftk the trustees of
the l>cl.a Howe school would willingly
give to the State the faim, and the pro
tit* from Ita endowment, rhr the benefit
of any Agricultural School which the
State might chooee to establish, with
only a saving clause that If tbe State
ehonld abandon tbe property for the
uses of a college, that It should revert.
Tbe immense tract of land could be
utilized, and the (climate and sfril are
much better adapted for the practical
teaching of Agriculture than tboClem-
son estate, sltnated as It is, almost at
the base of the mountain*.
