A good digestion i* better than a good liaiik
account. Tlie health of a community Is tin*
very soul of it* prosperity and enjoyment,
and nothing contrllHih-s so much to this us'
pure water. During certain season* Lower
L’andinn Is a sickly climate. Wc might dodge
the Devil round u stump but a stubborn fact
is the stump itself and we can’t dodge that. A
healthy adult daily consumes four and a half
pounds of wider in various forms. If Impure
tills water will stretch him on a bkl of sickness;
/it pure it will put the Hags of health flying in
his cheeks. Our surface wells are receptacles
for dead leaves, snake*, dust and as u rule
arc unprotected from the infiltration of super
ficial ooze. In towns the wells arc further
contaminated with animal matters and decayed
garbage. The New* and Courier states that a
barrel of kerosene buried iq the ground will
affect the wells in a radius of half a mile.
Many local epidemics, putrid scire throats, at^
mali-' Mict fevers can Ik- traced to organic im.
putitioH of drinking water. Every breeze
that sweeps over town leaves a doctor’s bill in
the bottom of the well. I do not claim, how
ever, that surface well* are filthy puddles and
artesian wells crystal founts. Recorded facts
•imply show that artesian water is by far the
more wholesome,TUid less easily tainted of tlie
two, and that wherever they have beefi bored
the health of tlie place lias been immediately,
effectually and permanently improved. Not
only as a hygenic precaution but for fire pur
poses also these wells deserve our attention.
Wooden towns rarely escape disastrous fire*
and chiefly from an inadequate supply of wa
ter and the want of an organized and discip
lined fire company. One well would keep the
fire tanks of a small town filled, and would
|>crhups reduce insurance. Bon- the wells,
and from a sanitary a* well as spiritual stand
point let us exclaim -with Isaiah. “Then-fore
with Joy shall ye drawwinter out of the wells
