While I was rowing across tbe mill pond at this place at a quick stroke the bow of the boat, which was the end in which the young lady was sitting, struck sudden^ ly and unexpectedly to us both a stump that was only one inch In diameter and projected by actual "measurement one Inch above the water’s surface. As the boat struck this obstruction it rebound ed about two (J) feet.
