marks of the lecturer were a* follows:
“What shakes the earth as the passing
wind the aspen, w recking the hope* and
homes of men as the quiver of the leal
disturbs the mites upon it? Why is the
earth shaken? Will it lie shaken again?
a id, if so. can the earthquake be pre
dicted, or can we eseajie or provide
against Its dangers? These are among
the questions suggested In' the earth
quake—questions to " liich all men de
mand answer. A partial answer to the
tlrst question was given from this plat
form last Saturday afternoon, in the
form of a lucid explanation of the me
chanics of tiie earthquake. According
to this explanation, the earthquake is
simply a series of elastic wavea trans
mitted through the rocks of tiie earth.
The full answer to the question cannot,
however, he given, without setting
forth the origin of tiie vibrations In the
earth, and this involves the great ques
tion of the origin of the earthquakes—a
question which cannot be satisfactorily
answered in the present state of knowl
edge. He would lie a bold man, indeed,
who would attimi|>t it, since probably
the highest and best Informed, ahd eei -
tainly the most conservative authority’
on the subject, has de«lared tha^ sjiec-
ulation as to the cause of earthquakes

who go to Arkansas are treated and
worked like I re tuts of burden. One of
their “thickly settled” burial grounds
is known as the South Carolina grave
yard. One negro buried there six chil
dren in three weeks. These mounds
solemnly emphasize the fact that “there
is no place like home.” These sad and
stubborn facts daily (•pining to light " ill
soon calm and cure the Arkansas fever.
Mr. Warmrek, one of the most pro
gressive farmers of this section, is ex-
perimentiiig with a fleck of tifty Sheep.
The sheep require but little attention
and return a good profit. The, grassy
plains of Barnwell would banquet many
a magniticent Southdown and tliere is
money hi it for thd'right man.
In practical sympathy Allendale’s
