The S|>anlsh or huah pcarimi Is a new
variety In this country, 1 think un
known In North Carolina and Virginia.
It commend* Itself to every farmer who
has tried it a* a valuable crop for mar
ket and for use on the farm. The nuts
are the pabulum of the modern legisla
tor as well as Hie small hoy, and are
more delicate than the North-Carolina
variety, hut a little smaller. They are
*n|N*rior to the roarse Virginia plnder.
The nuts grow around the tap root in a
cluster Ind all come up w hen pulled—
about a pint Mi the hill on land that w ill
make flve or sit bushels of corn Mi the
acre, more on better laud. The land
should not be Mmi stiff as it would hake
around the nuts and hold them in f{ie
ground. Tliey should he planted about
the same time as cotMm, the hills 12 Mi
HI inches and row* about fill inches
ajiart, slightly hilled tip with the scra
per. Will mature planted as late as
loth June, hut should he pulled up and
cured ns soon as the nuts rouinien.'e to

The tops do not He on the ground and
spread as the old varieties, hut hush up
and make a large quantity of most ex- 1
eel lent forage, cured as pea vine hay.
The tops may Im. mowed otf, cured
and put on the market and the nuts
raised by pulling the stubble, dried and
housed. The picking ran Im* done at
odd times in hot or cold weather.
The yield is from JO to 100 or more
busltel* of nuts and one' Mi tive thous
and iMiundsof hay.
With this nut and its tops we can raise
hogs, cattle and horses In abundance
and cheaply, make a large quantity of
more valuable manure, at the same time
having pmdii<*ed In the nuts a inarketa-
ahle commodity which always com
mands a remunerative price. i'he tops
and nuts might be haled Migether as
provender and would soon make a mar
ket for themselves In the cattle liens of
the cities.
They can he planted aiming com In
stead of peas, and have done well iu the
missing places on cotton beds.
