the sky clouded up again. The Hex pro-
ceMion this afternoon was'a brilliant affair,
embracing a series of humorous and bur
lesque tableaux. First rarao a detachment
of mounted amazons in rich costumes.
Then followed twenty cars, each contain
ing a tableau.

and various popular songs. It was com
posed of ten tableaux.

Following Rex’s procession came the In
dependent Order of the Moon in a travesty
on the prominent features or characteristics
of this Yankee nation.
The feature of the evening after the
Proteus procession was the reception of the
King and Queen at the Exposition Palace.
Thousands of their loyal subjects were
present from all parts of the country. «
The.Kcew of Proteus appeared this
evening on the principal streets in a pageant
illustrating scenes from Hans Christian An
dersen s "Fairy Land,' in a series of 18
tableaux on cars. A great crowd lined
the stloots through which the procession
moved, and everything passed off pleas
antly.

Rome. February 24.—Details have been
received this morning of tbe results of the
earthquakes yesterday, showing that the
effects arc far more serious than was
thought. Tbe loss of life and destruction
of propertp is learned to have been terrible.
Tlie most startling news comes from the
Gcftoese’ Riviera. Over 1,500 people were
killed in that district. At the village of
Bajardo, situated at the top of a mil, a
number of inhabitants tqp§, refuge in a
church when the shocks'were first, felt.
The subsequent and greater shock demol
ished the church, and 300 of the people
who were in it were killed. The destruc
tion of property in the section of Italy vis
ited by the earthquakes was immense and
widespread.
Reports of the disaster continue to ar
rive. The total number of deaths reported
up to the present timeriia about 2,000.
Shocks were felt gt Parma, Turin and Qgr-
oncza. Undulations of the earth were no
ticed at Catania, in Sicily, at the foot of
Mount jEtna. The director of the Turin
observatory telegraphs that seismic instru
ments are now oiticscent and that no fur
ther disturbance is feared.
