concerning the treatment of diphtheria
by benzoate of sodium, and aaseits
tb*%of two hundred consecutive ca<*eu
hebaa not lost a single ono. Ho ad
mits the possibility of a mistaken di
agnosis in some Instances, but, even
excluding fifty per cent on this account,
he still bias one hundred cases without
a death. His method Is as follows:
Every hour the patient takes a table
spoonful of a solution of bonz>ate of
sodium, fifteen grains to the ounce,
•ndat the same time one-s.xth of a
grain of sulphide of calcium in sirup
or granule. In addition to this the
throat Is thoroughly sprayed every
half hour with a ten per cent solution
of benzoate of sodium. This Is done
religiously at the regular intervals,
day and night, but no other local treat
meet Is employed. No attempt Is
made to dislodge tha false membrane,
and no penciling nor painting of the
fauces la resorted to. Tonics are giv
en and antipyretics are used when oc
casion calls for them. The nourish
ment consists of beef juice, tender rare
meat-, milk, etc, but bread and all other
articles which may cauae irritation of
the throat are forbidden. The sick
room U kept filled with steam frpm a
▼easel containing cartoolicacid, turpen
tine, and oil of eucalyptus in water.
The employment of benz-xite of sodl
am Is not a new method In the treat
ment of diphtheria, for It has been
tried and Is recommended highly by
Isrtserieb, Rleo, Ferret I, sod others.
