The counterfeiting at present is con
fined almost entirely to the coin issue* of
tha government. It la not generally
known that th* nickels and the pennies
are very successfully counterfeited, and
-that there ia no possible means of de
tecting the spurious from the genuine.
The niekela afford a very handsome profit.
All the counterfeiters have to do is to go
to the Revised Statutes and there they
find tbs materials to be used in their
making. All of the metal employed ia
base. .A nickel costa the government

had the exclusive manufacture jiLihese
coins there would tie a great profit in
them. But the coin can lie so easily re
produced that there is no means of esti
mating how many of them are put out of
the counterfeit class. If the government
should decide to call in this cUihb of coin

feits as well, because they are all made
of exactly the same material as the gov-
emiacnt's Issue. The bronze pennies are
also counterfeited. There is a profit in
this. The bronze of which the pennies
are mode costs twenty-four cento a

In the jail yard Is on electric fire alarm
box, connected with the general system
throughout Richmond. Ills Excellency
Gov. Lee had ordered that the fire alarm tie
turned in from the jail station at the same
time the drop fell. Promptly; at 1.10 P.
M. the massive bells rang out the death
knell, and the hearts of the people stood
still for a moment to realize that the be
trayer and murderer of his cousin had paid
the penalty of his awtul crime. The peo
ple aunamnded the jail in large numliere,
but only the few officers uml wltnesrc* re
quired by law were admitted into the jail
yard. Dr. Hatcher, his spiritual adviser,
was with him, ami he bore up to the last
with that wonderful self-possession that
has characterized him throughout.
He said nothing after mounting the scaf
fold. Dr. Hatcher said that tlie prisoner
requested him to say that he died without
ill-will to any one. He died protesting his
innocence.
Cluverius smiled while on the scaffold,
but was seen to shudder just before the
drop fell. He died of strangulation.
Thus ends one of the most interesting
chapters in criminal history.

operations at the Grange Encampment at
Bpvtanburg and is now engaged in cutting
and clearing away all the umlergrowth and
the unnecessary limber, prejwratory to the
erection of the necessary buildings. The
people are very much m earnest, and in
tend to make the encampment a success,
so far as it lies in their power. The appro
priation made by the legislature for the
exhibit of the Agricultural Department
and the amounts subscrilicd by our people,
