MrKlr«y PuMIr N»w You, November 18.—Ex Preri- deot Cheater A. Arthur died at 0 o’clock thi« morning, at his residence, No. 128 Lexington avenue. He had been ailing for aottM time from a complication of diacaana,- principally kidney affection. He spent the summer at a watering phmb> and it was supposed that this had strengthened somewhat his enfeebled constitution. His death was unexpected, it ndt being supposed outside his house that ha waa in any immediate danger. AC soon as the news of Mr. Arthur’s death waa made public many Hags on pubhc and private buildings were placed at half mast. Mr. Arthur had lived at No. 123 Lexington avenue for twenty years or more. A stroke of cerebral apoplexy suddenly, but not wholly un expected by the attending phyaician, terminated his life. The stroke came in his sleep, between Tuesday night and I Wednesday morning, and he did not mlly thereafter. His death was painless and slow, like the going out of a burned down candle, and for hours before the end came ho was unconscious to his sur rounding*. His son and daughter, his sister, his former law partner, Hhermnn W. Kncvals, and his closest friend, Sur rogate Rollins, were at his bedside. All reports to the contrary, Mr. Ar thur’s health has not improved during his stay at New London six weeks ago, and at nis return on October 1st he was no better than when be left the city. As the time passed no permanent improve- r meat came, and the physician* feared some such sudden strose as the one to which he succumbed. In his enfeebled condition even a light stroke of aiwplexy would prove fatal to the once robust With the beginning of the reek a marked change for the 1 in. In perfeetingthe arrangements for the funeral of ex-Preudent Arthur, it lias been determined to change the date of the ceremony until the morning of Mon day, November 22, in order to allow time for the arrival of several of the members of his Cabinet and other persons of dis tinction. A BIOUIUPIUCAL SKETCH. Chester Allan Arthur was bom in Fairfield, Franklin County, Vermont, on . a. . a » «nrast »* the death of the Court ef October 5, 1830. He was'the son of the Rev. Wm. Arthur, a Baptist clergyman, who came to America at the age of 18 from the County Antrim, Ireland. I .x- I’resident Arthur’s early edneation wax acquired in the schools of Vermont, ami he finished his education at Union Col lege, Schenectady, from which he was graduated in 1840, taking a prominent position in his class. After teaching school for a few yean he studied law, and 1 laving been admitted to the bar he formed a copartnership with Henry D. Gardiner, which was eminently success ful Ex-President Arthur was associated with Mr. William M. Evarts is the" cele brated Jonathan Lemmons case in 1832, in which the liberation of eight fugitive flaves was sustained by the Supreme Court of tlte United States, the argu ments on that position having been made by Evarts and Arthur. Mr. Arthur early took an active inte rest in politics as a Henry Clay Whig, and was a delegate to the convention at Saratoga, which founded the Republican ] >arty of New York. In 18<>0 he was ap- K in ted engineer in chief on the staff of >vemor Morgan, of New York, and was afterwards made Inspector General and Quartermaster General which last oflice he held until 18<]3. In 1883 Mr. Arthur returned to his law practice, and soon Itecamo engaged in politics, liaving t>een appointed Collector of the Port of N< York in 1871, and was that office in 1875.
