of the gray jackets could still be seen
the faded and tarnished gilt stars, the
emblems of tbe wearer’s rank.
In front of them rode Le«. His two
hands held the loosely swinging reins
and reeled Upob the pommel. Hia
head was bent and bis eyes wet e look
ing straight alo ad from under his
downcast blow but they seemed to see
nothing.
As the troop cantered up to his old
home ids horse stopped at tbe gate,
ami he atoused himself suddenly, as
from u dream, and cast his eyes upon
the familiar windows ami then around
over the group of gallant soldiers who
had followed bis fortunes for four
bloody years and gone down In defeat
under his banner.
The end of it all had come at last.
He threw himself from his horse, and
all his companions followed bis action.
They stood hat in hand, with an arin
through the bridle rein, fthlle Iwe
went from man to man, grasping each
baud, looking Intently into each fade
as though he would press It upon his
memory forever. Then be turned ahd
walked through the gate ahd up tbe
stepe to bis door. As h servant open
ed the door he paused with hi left
foot upon the veranda, bis right upon
the last eten and looktd hack for tbe
last time. Not a Word had been spok
en, not a goed-by uttered. There was
no sound heard but that of sobs as
these unkempt and grizzled heroes
of a hundred battles leaned tbeir
heads against the shoulders ot ihrir
horses and Wept.
J>e gave one look, and broke down
at last. Hie hands were over his eyes,
his frame shook with sobs, as be turn
ed quickly and disappeared Into his
lonely house. With tbe closing of tbe
door behind him ended forever the
wild dream of the Southern Confeder
acy.
