join an extract of s letter 1 received from
Rev. J. 1. Morrison, I'residcot of tbe
Hamp’on county convenuon. He says :
“Our anunty of Hampton organized
«u interdenominational convention upon
the tiist call for tbe same and have had
no reaaon to regret that we have worked
in the enterprise. They have never Con
flicted with our strictly denominational
woik. but have rather been the me ns of
stimulating to gieatsr real. They have
had the effect of bringing the believer*
of our one Jjord closer and nearer, of
softening Hapeiity mid making the point*
of contact more numerous. There has
been more real in S. S. work where the
convention reaches In Its Influence am
the only regret I lm v e is that it ia not

Dram Major : You still comlune to
be olo fashioned. Why don’t you come
to Florida ? I notice our folks up there
ff<’t awake to the Bxpoeltlon, but alum
her ou to the other great Ideas of ad
vancement. Florida Is now the great,
wonder, both in America and Europe.
Within two years towns have sprung
up here that the a>tme six - places have
been building twenty yeais In some of
the older States. One place on the 8.
F. R. R, Lakeland, has about the pop
ulatfon of Barnwell 0. H.. Ik about Ht-
teen months old sud In two years more
will no doubt be four time* as large.—
Tbe names of other towns that are
making rapid advancement on the
asms road are Klaaimmee, Plant City
and Bartow, besides a number of other
Itt'le places ’hat must soon come into
ootloe, In fact are beginning now to at
tract Attention. Winter-PaMC Is to
haves oolletre at 8140,000 Building
lota there are $1,000 an acre. It Is a
beautiful little place four mile* North
of thie. Hhall I speak of Orlando f —
None of tbe others mentioned can touch
her. Building* of ail kinds, of brick,
wood and manufactured stone are go
ing up. It la only at night and on Bun
day that the racket ceases. When we
have a chance to drive out we se« that
the town baa extended In almost every
direction. We have now two carriage
factories, three livery anil sale stables,
two banks, three machine shopa, three
large grain store*, dry goods, grocery,
•boe, millinery, hardware and other
•tores of every kind you may think or
ever heard of in America. Eveiy line
of trade you can imagine, except buy-
Dg cotton. Is now being followed or Is
so-m to be.
I bandied a few orange* the past
season in a retail way. I sold l.OOu to
2,000 a week at one cent each. 1 only
sell a few now, say 1,000 a weea, at
1 1 2 to 2 cents each. We will soon be
out and then I must come up to old
Baruweil and get some peaches. Bust-
ueas Is still good here. My trade le
not large aa I don't care to bother with
too much, have from two to five clerks.
I tbiuk, Major, you ought to pay us
a visit. By tbs way, John Bbuck i*
here running a newspaper, and seems
to be making friends as well as money.
1 think he’ll do well if he sticks.
I see by the Jacksonville paper that
164,000 people visited Florida the past
winter ; we will co doubt have 200,000
next winter Tbe broad guage railroad
will reach this nlaoe in 30 days and I
have oo doubt but that next season
we will be almost overrun with vlei-
tora. Property la not so cheap here as
to Biackvtile. Rents are pretfy high.
Bo*rd ia up ; you pay from 85 00 to
87 00 a week and boarders are plenti
ful. After all though, Major, the coun
try is uot seif sustain I tig. Nearly ail
the corn, bay, flout, oats, bran nod
many more thing* are brought, here.—
Tbe money ia made berfe to pay f.>r
theve things by clearing land, etetilng,
planting and plowing groves* raising
vegetable*, oranges, lettiona, pineap
ples, ftc. I think nio*t. of the money
I* brought here and paid out for laud
and labor. Of course the ofangfe Crop
and other thing* btlng a great deal
and Will continue to bring tiro re all tbe
time till at last We may expect tbe
a uiotry to be rlcb And support Itself.
[any men are getting rich speculating
in property but I’m not. Good bye.
