trees which afford a grateful shade to the
pedestrian. Through the center of ma
ny of them there ate double rows of fine

hundreds of Euulish sparrows indulge in
never-ceasing twitterings, ot are hopping
at your very tcel chirping thuir merry
notes.
THE CEMETERY.
Augusta has reason to be proud of her
‘( ity for the Dend.’ Enclosed by a sub
stantia] brick wall with iron gales situ
and at intervals along its line, it pre*
Bents an attractive appearance. We enter
the gate near the office and are undccid*
ed which way to turn. As tho eye wan
ders overtne magnificent display of gor
geous flowers of every hue, the glisten
ing shafts of marble marking the sleep*
ing places of tlie dead, and nestling amid
the beautiful, bright evergreens, fit em
blems of the soul s immortality, we rev
erently bare our heads while otir hearts
beat in sympathy for those whose tears
have watered those graves. These
giounds cover many acres and are being
extended as the occasion demands. A
short ramble briugs in view the strange
sight of a rusty old cannon, muzzle down
ward in the earth. As we approach
perceive that this forms the Hailstone of
a grave, at the head of whi. h stands

the following inscription :

Died in Augusta, Georgia,

Aged 105 years.
He served in the Cherokee War of 1753.

In the village of Dhrnwell, Bouth
Carolina, dwells Dr. Geo. R. C. Todd,
now about 55 years of age Dr Todd
is an eminent physician. Hb carried
off the honor of bis class when a youth,
and had the amplest Instructions ft ora
the then grand masters of his profes
slon. His life has been an eventful
t he. In 1859 ’60 he wascommlesioued
os surgeon of Texas Rangers by Oov
eruor Houston. Hesubeequently trav
eled over Mtxlco as an expert in bie
vocation.- When the war between tbe
States became Imminent, Dr. Todd
promptly offered bis sotvices to Jef
ferson Davis but failed, at the time, to
make tbe President of tbe Confeder
acy believe that more than fourteen
surgeons would be required. This
blindness to tbe tremendous nature of
tbs impendihg conflict almost made
Dr. Todd despair of tbe cauft* He
enlisted os a soldier in a Virginia bat
tery and gave hU valuable medical Ser-

Eight mouths afterwards, he deman
ded a fuii surgeon’s position, abd re
ceived it, after rigorous examination,
which he courted. He was assigned to

tysburg, bie health deteriorated, but

den. Dr. Todd joined Mr. DaVIs at
Abbeville, after the evacuation of Rich-
