We put our deliberate judgment oft
tbe aaaertton that tbe census of IBM, as
compered with the census of 1880, will
show that the negre* population of the
South is a diminishing quantity as com
pared with the white population. The
•oortuary reports of every city, town and
tillage, as far as obtainable, show the
negro death-rate to be from twice to Ate
times as large as the death-rate of the
whites. This may not prevail iu rural
commtrmtMa, but there is little reason to
believe that it will be offset or reversed.
In a careful comparison of white families
with negro families wc do not find lar
gcr proportion of children in the Utter
than in the former. Indettl the dUin-
c’iuation of city housekeepera to hire ser
vants who arc encumbered with children,
or for that matter with husbands, indu
ces ua to believe (hat the reverse i»
nearer the truth. The census of 1890
wiH be very apt to revise the mitjor pre>

opinion in tbe attitude of the races in
the 8otith, we should still hold it be
cause of outside considerations. The
negro has HteraWy nowhere to recruit
fV'm. He lata no outside reserve from
which to draw. He vill he much more
apt to go to Africa, than to have the Af
rican come here. On the other hand
there are teaming millions of whites in
every State bordering on the South, ooni
atanl'y being crowded by thousands from
overcrowded Kurop*. Tempted by the
rich fields of the South, the incompara
ble dimate and the exhn net less reeouroos
of mine and forest, a large proportion of
whkes from the Northern Statu must
soon drift southward. They hare been
kept out for the past twenty years by
prejudice, mtoapprehoMiotr or ignorance.
This has been rapidly wearing away.—
The election of a Democratic President
will hasten its elimination. This once
gone, the title of white immigrants will
spring toward the South. This, of ttsdf,
Would overbalance any advantage the ne-
gro race might have because of its al
leged greater fecundity.
It will be well for those who ait) dis
cussing the race problem, or even thoae
who are quietly making up their own
minds about it, to make no final Judg*

A public temperance meeting was held
iu the Methodist church at Grahams on
the evening of the 31st ult. aod was
largely attended by An appreciative and
representative congregation. Mr. J. E.
Steadman was called to the clmir and af
ter prayer by Rev. W. D. Rioc and sen
vice of song by the choir we were highly
entertained by a moat admirable addre»s
from Rev. Lucius Cuthbert of Aikeu —
Ha coognttfelsued the people of Barn
well on their prohibitory law and boldly
Urged them to assert their manhood and
tha majesty of the law by promptly re
porting every Violation, that it may no
longer lie said "Prohibition does not pro
hibit.” We will not attempt to give
even a synopsis of the speech, hut suffice
it to say it Was otic of the boldest and
best we have ever heard. After some
remarks by the writer on the nature of
the I, O. of G, T. an opplioatiou for a
charter was presented and (he number of
signatures was increased to thirty. We
expect pool to institute a lodge of Good
Templars at this place. Our meeting
was a grand success and will, we trust,
result iu much good to the cause. May
Wc hope that other communities in
Baruwell will follow our example ? Let
public meetings be called, temperance
speeches delivered and temperance so-
ototiae organised, aa this is tbs best way
to tone up public sentiu ant on this im
