rburts is that the whole thing is purely
voluntary, that the chief element of eve
ry trsusactiou is that of confidence, and
that the decisions arc made on the com
mon principles of Lime**. .Their action
uuy be restricted to only certain matter,
or, by consent, may comprehend all mat
ters iu dhputc. Tbe evidence may be
the simple statement of fho parties, or
may include witnesses, documentary evi
dence and also legal counsel, as may be
agreed on. The decisions arc flnalj only
with such provisions for appeal aa in oth
er courta of rcc ird. There are no ju
ries—which have become susceptible, as
all arc aware, to bias from social or po
litical influences, us well an others not
less frequent or efficacious— ; no host of
tubpernat to a higher court; no pro
tracted delays from mistrial or daucing
attendance through the docket of a term,
or from term to term. At the appointed
time judgment is summarily, impartial
ly, intelligently, and almost inexpensive
ly awarded. From the intelligence aud
integrity of the judge?—the parties hav
ing each the privilege of chooaing an as
sociate with tbe umpire—and the privL
lige also of counsel, the objection, that
the patiids expose themselves to losses
froth ignorance of their full rights, is
overcome. The instances are by no
means rare where bankruptcies and in
solvencies can be traced to some pro-
trubted latr suit, perhaps for a trivial
amoitut, the costs and expenses mount
ing to ruinous sums, (iullivet’s father,
wc arc told by Dean 8wift, was ruined
by u chancery suit which he gained with
costs. What is wanted is prompt, chop
redress for all—especially petty—wrongs.
K.T.J.
The Fibi.ic Hmjhways.—This is
one u a ter upon which our people arc a
century bclund. From some inexplicable
cause the law if wftrkingToods has from
time immemorial been almost a dead
letter. Why this is so it is needless to
enquire it jjrcsthit except to remark that
our people by years of practice have been
tuuglft to disregard’ flili public duty.
The icsult is, our public roads are a re
buke to our civilization. Now is the
season of the year when the roads are
pretended to be worked; aud joints of
from two to four miles are passed over
iu half the day. A shovel of dirt thrown
in a hole here and thore, a bush put
down and the hands pass on, whCii nihe-
teen out of every twenty miles of road
in Marion county should be ditched on
both sides. Our farmers are wide awake
public spirited and take great piide in
their stock, but hare no cure lor the pub
lic highways where their horses and
mules srcpu’lcd to death. As an illustra
tion there is a public highway In the up
per portion of this county that cro?ses a
flat pond about 250 yards across. Thrce-
fourtha of the time the pond is impassa-
bli aAd a road half a mile nrouud, part
ly thorough heavy sand has to be need,
when there arc hands enough on that
joint of (he road no doubt to ditch and
cuu&cwny that pond iu two days. This
illustration is tf general application.
Shortly the crops will begin to be moved
and great complaint wi I be made about
the condition of the rduds. Scnitfbody
will be reporting some joint of road to
tbe [rand jury, aud the grand jury will
report it to tbv court and tbe court will
have the presentment served on the
County ('ommisMoncrs, which ends (t.
The trouble is, public sentiment is
wiong on this subject. Twelve days is
a sufficient length of time to be given to
working the roads in each year. But
there is rcmisvucss iu duty all the way
up from the road hands to the County
Commissioners. We appreciate thedifi
iicultics that surround the officers who
have (be highways iu charge in attempt
ing t$ enforce the law, but they arc not
free fr6m blatuc in nut repairing aud
seeing that the roads arc put in better rc'
pair.—Fee Dee Index.

school, some Interest log reminlvcences
of that affair which I aball refer to In
aoother-Jetter, Whlloagueat at tbs
doctor's house, one of Lie little boys
was severely stung by what was sup
posed to be a wasp or yellow jacket,
and from tbla Incident I learned of a
remedy for tbe Ldtee and stings of
insects which Is as curious as tbo doc
tor pronounces Infallible.
‘Take,’ said he, 'three leaves, each
leaf selected from a different plant or
tree, combine them by twisting them
together and slightly bruising. Apply
to the wounded part by gently rubbing
over the surface, and tbe paiu will in
stantly disappear.',
T must confess my Incredulity,’ said
I. ‘But how about the particular leav
es to be eelected ?’
‘That makes no difference,’ was tbe
reply. ‘Any kind of leaf will answer,
provided three different kinds an « m
ployed. For any kind of sling, either
from Insect or nettle, it will < ffret an
immediate cure, aud the remedy is
simple and sure. My wife always usee
it in soch cases and can also testify to
US efficacy.’
‘Well’ queried T. ‘Would not the
same result be attained by employing
one, or two Instead of three leaves ?’
'Wrong again,' he replied. T have
experimented and tested it repeatedly,
having applied first one and then two,
with no results. But just so soon u*
I combined the three tbe pain was In
stantly removed.’—Constitution,
