While representatives of the Census Bureau are mak
ing the decennial count of South Carolina’s growing popu
lation next month, scientists will check on the number,
variety and health of the aquatic population in the
Wateree River near Camden. The census of the stream’s
life will be conducted by the Academy of Natural Sconces
of Philadelphia, under the sponsorship of E. I. du Pont
de Nemours & Company, which is building a plant for the
manufacture of “Orion” acrylic fiber at Camden.
Purpose of the study of the
Wateree is to assist work at the
plant for pollution abatement, on
which Du Pont has spent more
than $15,000,000 in a continuing
company-wide program. The
Wateree program, which is one of
the first of its kind in the nation,
was announced over the weekend
following a meeting of state and
Du Pont representatives in the
Office of L. W. Bishop, director of
the Research, Planning and De
velopment Board. *
