Guard Against Fire

Each year fire turns Christmas
into tragic memory in many
American homes tot only because
someone neglected to guard
against the hazards accompany
ing the Christmas tree.
How can you prevent accidents
from ruining your holiday? All
you have to do is to follow a few
simple safety rules.
Few people realize that the or
dinary Christmas tree can be on*
of the most flammable objects
known. “It is filled with pitj^end
resin. Once ignited it is very dif
ficult to extinguish.”
An average-siae Christinas tree
takes less than two mtnutoa to
burn up. This means the tree can
easily start a roaring blaze in your
home before the fire department
arrives to combat toe fire.
To cut down on the fire dam
age, you should choose a small
tree and keep it outdoors until a
few days before Christmas. Set it
up in the coolest part of the
house, and if necessary, shut off
the radiator closest to the tree.
Do nt>t use cotton or paper for
decoration. “Fireproof” decora
tions are now available, and add
much to Christmas safety.
Dangerous Christmas tree fires
can also be set off by tiny sparks.
Therefore, it is important to
avoid placing electric trains
around tree, and to check wiring
carefully. Wires bearing the U. L.

fire safety. Never use frayed or
worn wires.
