Unpaid Coupon On
Bond Issue To Build
City HaU Turns Up
It's rather coincidental that
just about the time that the
city hell tower should he
found to he unsafe that a $500
bond, one of a series totaling
SIMM issued in IMS for the
erection of the city hall
should turn up with a lone
coupon for $M
City Commlaaioner Joe
McKain was given the bond
in Columbia last week. No
demand was mad* however,
for the payment of SIS out
standing on tamo. Evidently
the ownen of the bond kept
it as e souvenir.
However, the remarkable
feature is the revelation that
the present city building
sesetod fat ISM evidently cost
only SIMM whereat it it es
timated that it will eesi
SIMM to repair the tower
on it alone.
The bond carries the nota
tion that it is ene of a series

The tower on the City Hall, long a Camden land
mark, has been found to be in a very dangerous condi
tion and will either have to be repaired or torn down,
City officials have announced. It is estimated that it will
take at least $15,000 to make it safe and', since it has
no utility value, members of City Council said Monday,
that in view of the City’s financial condition they did not
know that this outlay would be justified.
\ •
City Manager Lott Rogers said
had been discovered that the
of 12 by 12 sills which sup-
the tower were in very bad
condition and those on the east
side in particular had practically
rotted away. .
The chy called in two contrac-
ors to examine the tower and
x>th made the same report—that
it was in a very dangerous con
dition and that something would
have to be done at once to make
safe.
If the tower should be repaired
it would also be necessary to re
pair the moulding on the outside
and put on a new roof.
Members of Council said they
were In a quandary as to what to
do. They fully recognize the sen
timent which the people of the
city have for the old tower which
has stood in its present location
since 1888. At the same time they
feel that in the city's present ff-
