cient Druids, a pagan race of early
British people. 'Hie modern cus
tom of decorating for Hallowe’en

the ancient autumn festival cele
brated by these Druid people
which they called Samhain, or
Summer’s End.'On this occasion,
the celebrants feasted on all the
kinds of foods which had
grown during the summer. 1
Also from the Druids comes the
custom or belief that on Hallo
we’en, ghosts, spirits, fairies,
elves and witches come out to do
harm. On this particular night,
large, bright bonfires would be
buut which were supposed to
scare the “spirits” away. The peo
ple would gather about these bon
fires, shuddering and casting
furtive glances into the darkness,
and tell eerie stories about their

of stimulating winter egg produc
tion, according to P. Hi Gooding,
leader, Clemson Poultry Extension
Work. He says trials have shown
that the presence of light causes
increased functioning of tl
producing organs.
“Lights wul not increase the
yearly egg production of hens, but
lights will cause hens to lay a
greater number of eggs during the
fall and winter months when the
price is highest,’’ he explains.
