per cent, from prospects Sept 1.
It is 175,000 bales less than pre
dicted Aug. 1.
A crop of 550,000 bales would
be the shortest since 1941 and the
third smidlest in 57 year*. USDA
Statistician Frank O. Blade noted.
Insect damage and heavy rains

would be 37 per cent below the
781,000 bales made last year and
23 per cent less than the 1938-47
