James Jackson Is
Returned To Gang;
Escaped Years Ago
James Jackson, colored man,
serving a 30-day sentence on the
county chaifi gang will be taken
to Raleigh this week, to be return
ed to the North Carolina state
penitentiary from whence he es
caped several years ago.
Finger prints of Jackson, taken
by the Camden police, following
his arrest after he had pawned a
lawn mower that he had “bor
rowed” from a local resident, were
sent to the FBI in Washington.
On Aug. 19 Charles P. Snow, di
rector of the Bureau of Identifica
tion of the North Carolina prison
department, wired the local police
that the Anger prints sent him
from Washington show that Jack-
son escaped from the North Caro
lina peh several years ago.
According to Chief of Police
Alva Rush, Jackson has been liv
ing in Camden for the past three
years or more, making a living
working in private yards, caring
for gardens, cutting grass, etc.
On May 8 the police took him
Into custody on a charge of as
sault and battery. When arraigned
in recorder’s court he was sen
tenced to pay a fine of $50 or
serve 30 days on the chain gang.
The court placed him on proba
tion, providing he paid $25. Jack-
son promised the police he would
pay off on his fine from his earn
ings and he was released from
custody. The police claim he hg?
not made any payment on the
fine since.
When taken into custody after
his pawning of the mower, the
police lost no time in finger print-1/
mg him and turning him ov«a\to I
